Climate Change Summit

Friday, October 27, 2017 - 11:00am to 12:30pm
Rackham Auditorium 915 East Washington Street Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Join University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability for the Climate Change Summit, which will feature five rising star panelists to spark a conversation and raise awareness about climate change with the school's inaugural dean, Dr. Jonathan Overpeck (who will moderate the discussion). Panelists include:

  • Ben Bunker: CEO, Global BrightLight Foundation
Bunker, who earned his MS from SEAS, has been looking for a way to engage more deeply with the school. Bunker managers the daily operations of the Global BrightLight Foundation, whose vision is a world with universal access to clean, sustainable, and affordable energy. Before joining BrightLight, Ben worked as a consultant with ICF International where he supported the U.S. Agency for International Development and the EPA.

  • Angel Hsu: Director, Yala Data-Driven Environmental Solutions Group
Hsu is responsible for Yale University's efforts in developing data-driven tools to inform environmental policy as a data architect. In other words, she creates useful, useable indicators and builds software to track key environmental trends so policymakers can make better decisions when it comes to climate change, air quality, and conservation. She holds a PhD in Forestry and Environmental Studies from Yale University and serves as an Assistant Professor at Yale NUS-- the first liberal arts college in Singapore.

  • Ahmina Maxey: North American Coordinator, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA)
Maxey, a 2007 PitE graduate (BS), started her career in Detroit-- the only major city in the nation, at the time, without a curbside recycling program. IN 2014, she successfully pushed for a city-wide recycling program and now fights for an incinerator-free future. At GAIA, Maxey helps communities working toward cleaner waste removal.

  • Kait Parker: Meterologist, Weather.com and ABC News
Parker is reaching out to her fellow millenials, producing and hosting shows on digital-only outlets like the Weather Channel app and Snapchat. She has a Youtube series called, "Science is Real," that examines the consequences of a warming planet and will soon launch a 50-part series that will chart climate impacts in every state via videos, written pieces, and a graphic novel.

  • Sean A. Watkins: Community Manager, The Solutions Project
Watkins shares the success stories of diverse climate leaders across the country over Facebook, Instagram, and even physical billboards. The purpose is to build inspiration and momentum for others to push for 100% energy in their communities. He produced videos hosted by Mark Ruffalo that profiled tribal members and supporters at Standing Rock.
